Bet Shemesh in the heartland of the Bible
The city of Bet Shemesh is located in the “heartland of the Bible” around us many Biblical events took place – the battle of David and Goliath, Judah met Tamar and Samson married Delilah. Tradition also recounts that Stephen, the first martyr of the Christian Church, was buried in our area and that Gamliel one of the teachers of Paul lived nearby.
Then went Samson down, and his father and his mother, to Timnath, and came to the vineyards of Timnath; and, behold, a young lion roared against him. And the spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and he tore him as he would have torn a kid, and he had nothing in his hand; but he told not his father or his mother what he had done. (Judges 14, 5-6)
And they of Beth-Shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley; and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it (Samuel 1, 6, 13).
David and Goliath
Then said David to the Philistine, You come to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a javelin; but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied (Samuel 1, 17, 45).
And David put his hand in his bag, and took from there a stone, and slung it, and struck the Philistine in his forehead, so that the stone sunk his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth (Samuel 1, 17, 49-50).
